HYFLO was established in January 2014 to set up the production for the Self Closing Flood Barriers (SCFB™) to meet the growing requirement for global solutions to extreme flooding events and to establish the highest possible quality for all the components. Therefor all the components were redesigned by Hyflo civil engineering specialists and there are subjected to strength calculations and various tests. In total the SCFB™ underwent in excess of more than 70 tests; these tests included static load, dynamic load, buoyancy force, sand-, gravel-, duration (35 days) extreme cold temperature-, earthquake- and obstruction-tests. These tests concluded that the barrier never stayed stuck and rose up in all tests. The SCFB™ remained watertight in all tests. The SCFB™ is made of very durable materials designed to at least for 50 to 100 years and remains virtually maintenance free of many years.

The SCFB™ can be built at any required length: 1 m - 10 m - 100 m - 1000 m and more. To meat all the requirements Hyflo will make every barrier to fit. The wall is fabricated in nominally 1 m lengths with a close tolerance. The floating walls are connected to each other with a special designed reinforced rubber and stainless steel 316 mounting strips. The basin from the Self Closing Flood Barrier can be built out of concrete or steel. Depending on the requested length and location the Hyflo dealers can advice what the best option is for this location and if a service pit is needed. Hyflo and the dealers can help and support local architects and civil engineers with the necessary calculations and drawings.   

HYFLO Production

All the components of the SCFB™ are produced in the Netherlands and are recorded and tested. One of the main components of the SCFB™ is the floating wall. This floating wall consists of a foam core with a fibreglass outer layer. The wall are reinforced with composite profiles and woven fibreglass and is fabricated in a special designed mold that the floating walls can be made out of one piece. This combination give the wall extra strength and makes it very light. Because of the unique design each section can resist at least three times the maximum water pressure.

SPAKENBURG, The Netherlands, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- A 300-meter self-closing flood barrier, the longest in the world, is built in the historical fishing harbor of Spakenburg in central Netherlands, a latest addition to the low-lying country's innovative approach in flood protection.

"This flood barrier is a beautiful example of tailor-made solutions we develop to protect vulnerable areas, especially urban areas, a task which could not be done with traditional dike reinforcements," Roeland Hillen, director of the Dutch Flood Protection Program told journalists attending a test of the barrier on Monday.

Witnessed by locals, water officials and journalists, the barrier came out of the ground and rose to the planned height of 80 centimetres in about 20 minutes as water was pumped from the small port into a kind of "pockets" underneath to push it up. When deactivated the barrier disappears into the pavement. Only the steel top that stretches around the harbor is visible.

"That is exactly what happens when the water in the port rises if a severe storm hits the historical harbor," explained Hillen.

Steel tanks beneath the barrier, made of plaques of lightweight Kevlar material with a steel top, will then be naturally filled by the high water levels. The inflow of water will autonomously push the barrier up and out of its underground resting place.

Such a construction cost 7 million euros, three times more than a traditional dike. "It is worthwhile because this barrier does not interfere with the typical character of this historical harbour. It takes up little space and respects the human environment of the former fishing village, which has become a tourist destination," said Tanja Klip-Martin, chairwoman of waterboard Vallei en Veluwe, the broader area surrounding Spakenburg.

"It is first time that this technique is applied on primary water barriers in the Netherlands and the world," she added. "And it is one of the leading examples of working together in an almost 'community building' way."

The barrier is also a latest addition to the innovative approach in flood protection in the Netherlands. The country is divided and ringed by the world's most extensive dike network of over 22,500 km, with prominent technology enhanced and innovative solutions.

"We must anticipate what is coming in the future. Increasing amount of heavy rain falls, periods of drought have now become normal phenomena in our densely populated delta area," explained Klip-Martin.

Actually, the Dutch invest over 1 billion euros a year in water safety, drought, availability to sweet water and climate adaptation, of which 400 million euros are invested in flood protection. The country's second Delta program, launched in 2008, includes a plan to reinforce 1200 km of dikes and levees until 2050.

With its first Delta program launched after the 1953 flood which left unprecedented damage and 1,836 casualties, the Netherlands has rebuilt its dikes and dunes with the new way of thinking -- live with the water instead of fighting against the water.

"The second Delta is a comprehensive approach to meet the challenge of climate change and water management, looking ahead until the year 2100 to make sure the country is safe," said Hillen.

Based on different scenarios the Dutch have developed "an adaptive Delta management program," but the program will have to change depending on the situation, noted Henk Ovink, Dutch special water envoy.

The program has taken into consideration the Paris agreement, the first ever legally binding global climate accord pledging to keep world temperature rise this century below 2 degrees Celsius.

"All [Dutch] measures until 2035 and 2050 have been adopted according to the Paris agreement. If we do not meet the Paris agreement it means we have to look into different scenarios," said Ovink.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch national water authority, sea level of the North sea at the Dutch coast has risen approximately 23 cm in 125 years (1.9 mm per year). Almost similar to the global rise of sea level of 22 cm during the same period. But, since 1993 the global sea level rises in a faster pace than estimated before.

"When the program started eight years ago we took into account that the sea level would rise up to 85 cm until 2100. But the acceleration of the rise of the sea level is even stronger than predicted, while heavy rain downfalls which were predicted to occur in the middle of the century, are already here," warned the director of the Dutch Flood Protection Program.
