HYFLO was established in January 2014 to set up the production for the Self Closing Flood Barriers (SCFB™) to meet the growing requirement for global solutions to extreme flooding events and to establish the highest possible quality for all the components. Therefor all the components of the SCFB were redesigned by Hyflo civil engineering specialists and there are subjected to strength calculations and various tests. In total the SCFB underwent in excess of more than 70 tests; these tests included static load, dynamic load, buoyancy force, sand-, gravel-, duration (35 days) extreme cold temperature-, earthquake- and obstruction-tests. These tests concluded that the barrier never got stuck and rose up in all tests. The SCFB remained watertight in all tests. The SCFB is made of very durable materials designed to at least for 50 to 100 years and remains virtually maintenance free for many years.
The Floating wall
The walls are made out of different layers of textile and woven fibreglass and is reinforced with composite profiles. The core is is a PUR foam that is cut with a deduction of a notional tolerance and the outer layered is from GRP has for a long live time. They are fabricated in a special designed vacuum mold that the floating walls can be made out of one piece. This combination give the wall extra strength and makes it very light. Because of the unique design each section can resist at least three times the maximum water pressure. The wall is fabricated in 1 m lengths and as his own serial number. During production the walls are constantly monitored and signed off. After production every wall is tested and weighed with a 0,05 tolerance.
The steel basin is designed and detailed in-house by Hyflo and there is additional design input required by the purchaser. Single barriers up to approx. 8 m in length and sections up to 4m in length to suite any length. The steel production is done with the most modern machines and meet the tight tolerances requested. The steel basin of the SCFB undergone a thermal spraying and coating for a longer life time the other components are galvanised steel or can be chosen by the customer to have a nice top finish. The complete SCFB can also be build in stainless steel. This material suits the full range of SCFB barriers. on the requested length and location Hyflo can advise what the best option is for the specific location.
The concrete basin is designed and detailed in-house by Hyflo and there is additional design input required by the purchaser. The concrete basin as it can be pre-cast or cast-insitu to any length to suit the floating wall increments. The concrete basin can be built on site or at location. Depending on the requested length and location Hyflo will make the drawings for the concrete basin. The concrete is reinforced with steel quality B500 with a specific weight of 25 kN/m. The basin is not normally designed to act as an independent retaining wall but there is no reason why it should not be incorporated in the design. Hyflo recommend using high strength reinforced concrete C60/75.
